Dominigenes of the Vestigial Series in Drosophila Melanogaster.

چکیده
T IS almost axiomatic in studies of developmental genetics that the action I of a particular gene cannot be described completely without reference to the residual genotype or “general genic environment” (term proposed by TSCHETWERIKOFF 1926). It is also generally agreed that “all factors probably partake of the nature of modifiers, since each factor appears to affect many characters and to alter the expression of other factors” (SINNOTT and DUNN 1932). The widespread acceptance of these concepts has led to the frequent assumption of the presence of modifiers on general grounds without a serious attempt to define the genetic basis more precisely. Modifiers whose presence has been only vaguely determined have even played an important role in certain theoretical generalizations. particularly in the field of evolutionary genetics. Few studies have been made with a view to a precise analysis of the genetics of a system of modifiers. T.he present investigation is an extension of one very thorough analysis of this type of situation-that is, the effect of a series of genetic modifiers on heterozygotes bearing the normally recessive gene vestigial in Drosophila melanogaster.

The Action of Certain Mutants upon the Penetrance of Heterozygous Vestigial Wing in Drosophila Melanogaster.
NE of the methods used in the study of the mechanism of gene action 0 in Drosophila melanogaster has been to observe the modification of the phenotypic effects of mutant genes following alterations in the environment in which development occurs. Thus the effects upon the mutant phenotype of temperature changes, crowding of the cultures, and starvation of the developing individuals have been obs...
متن کاملAconitase and Developmental EndPointsasEarly IndicatorsofCellularToxicity Induced by Xenobiotics in Drosophila Melanogaster
Background: In this study, the toxicity of the different xenobiotics was tested on the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster model system. Methods: Fly larvae were raised on food supplemented with xenobioticsat different concentrations (sodium nitroprusside (0.1-1.5 mM), S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5-4 mM), and potassium ferrocyanide (1 mM)). Emergence of flies, food intake by larvae, and pupation h...
متن کاملConcentration dependent effect of morphine, aspirin, capsaicin and chili pepper hydro alcoholic extract on thermal and chemical pain model in fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
Introduction: Pain research using animal models is related to ethical concerns, so invertebrates and insects have been recommended by researchers. In the present study, the nociceptive and antinociceptive effects of capsaicin, aspirin, morphine and chili extract were examined using fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) as an alternative for rodent pain model. Methods: Stage 3 of larvae and ad...

Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...
متن کاملThe effect of dominant vestigial alleles upon vestigial-mediated wing patterning during development of Drosophila melanogaster
The vestigial gene product is required for the completion of wing development in Drosophila melanogaster. In the absence of vestigial gene expression, cells within the larval wing and haltere imaginal discs fail to proliferate normally thus producing adults with severely reduced wings. Of a large number of vestigial mutations that have been characterized, only two are currently known to exist, ...
